Destiny

Psalm 90:12

12 Teach us to number our days aright,

that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

“Genesis” was the name of the station where we waited for the train.  Time to get on.  “Time” was stamped on our tickets by the Great Conductor.

A loud blast signaled its departure.

Next stop:  Destiny

We could see from our windows all sorts of beautiful wonders.  Each showed a different stage of life.

One showed a young boy, enjoying time with his family.

He was then running away from childhood trauma that chased him

The next window had teenagers smoking marijuana, rebelling against their parents.  Another had students studying, passing their classes, and finally graduating.

The scene flashed and moved onto a picture of a beautiful family with their grandparents, together smiling.  The last thing we saw was a tombstone, cracked from age, symbolizing the end of the story.  Darkness slowly covered the window.

There was a bright light coming from the back of the train.

Through the window was a small, multi-colored flame.  The wind tossed it to and fro, as it bent towards a dead tree.  It longed to engulf this tree, but not just that one, an entire dead forest.  We heard a voice whisper “Desire…Passion”.

The tiny flicker reached its goal, and the dead wood came alive, dancing with bright oranges and yellows.  The voice spoke again, “Purpose…Fulfillment”

The view moved from the blaze to the bright sky, full of stars.  Slowly, it faded away.

The train began to slow down.  We took our aged luggage and stepped off the tracks.  Our frail bones tingled with a wanting to see more, but it was too late.  Our Time had run out.  We had arrived at Destiny…

Psalm 139:16

16 You saw me before I was born.

Every day of my life was recorded in your book.

Every moment was laid out

before a single day had passed.

Time is the most important resource for every human being.  It’s all we have, and we can’t get any more of it.  God has given us a certain amount to live with.  Many of us waste a lot of it on meaningless things.  You can think of a few.  It’s only when we are about to run out of it, do we start thinking, “I wish I would’ve spent more time on…”  Don’t wait for that moment.  Life is all about how you arrange your time.  Everything and everywhere you use it is an investment in your present and future.  Is your life being used to its fullest potential?  Can you change a few things around so it has a better return?

In the short story/poem above, I wrote about some people who got on a train that showed them various destinies, and finally, the destiny of a small flame.  This tiny light wanted to light up a whole forest and multiply itself everywhere.  It happened, but only after persevering.  When they got off the train, it was too late.  They were too old and their destiny passed them by.  All they did was dream about a more fulfilling life and watched others live out their own.  Sometimes, we pay so much attention and fantasize about other people’s lives, that ours slips away and all the while we are thinking, “look at what that person did.  I can’t do anything like that because I’m not special, I don’t have that talent, I wasn’t born like that, etc.”  Amazing people are not born; they are made in a furnace.  Everyone who has ever accomplished anything in life (whether good or bad) has a story to tell as to how they did it.

God cares about our time.  He knows every second of it and how we will spend it.  There’s nothing that’s more important to Him than us.  To prove it, God knows how many hairs we have on our head, even when we gain some or lose some (Luke 12:7).  Honestly, who cares about the exact number of hairs we have!  God just did it to show us how much we mean to Him.  Jesus Christ, the Son of God, used every second He had available to Him while He walked the Earth.  How else could He still be making headlines over 2,000 years later, and He only had a ministry that lasted 3 ½ years!  He changed the entire world, forever, in a short amount of time.

Do whatever it takes to complete what God has put in your heart.  When you want to quit, pray, and ask Jesus to give you strength.  He needed it, and so will you.  He’s been there, and so have millions of others who have accomplished their dreams, purpose, and destiny.  The only difference between them and you is how they used their time.  Start today.  Don’t wait for tomorrow, because we don’t know how many tomorrows we have left.
